“Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit.” Galatians 5:25
This verse is my prayer this week, for you and for me.
It holds both a promise and a call.
We, as the children of God and followers of Christ have been given the most incredible gift, the gift of the Holy Spirit. So amazing and powerful is this gift that Christ himself said, “but very truly I tell you, it is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Advocate will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you.” (John 16:7) How could it possibly be better for Jesus to leave? I’m sure the disciples were wondering the same thing. But the one being sent in His place, the “Advocate” was the one who would change everything.
We have been given this gift. Each of us who has confessed Jesus as Lord over our lives has been given direct access to the Father, through the Holy Spirit. He is the power behind everything we seek to do for God. He is the one who not only works through our obedience, but He also gives us the will to obey! “For it is God who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill his good purpose” (Philippians 2:13)
This is the PROMISE.
The call in this verse, and what I pray God is drawing you towards this week is to keep in step with the Spirit.
If you’ve ever tried running with someone, you know exactly how hard it can be to keep “in step”. It’s difficult to find another runner who keeps the same pace as you because usually one is faster and the other, always trying to keep up. I’ve experienced both. Neither is very fun. Always being the one lagging behind, huffing and puffing to keep up, can definitely discourage and dishearten you. Likewise, constantly waiting for someone who just can’t keep your pace brings out impatience in the best of us.
But what does it mean to “keep in step” with the Spirit? How can we keep from racing ahead of God, or falling behind and missing out on the moment? The key is LOVE. When we are truly motivated by our love for God and a desire to be in intimate relationship with Him, it drives us to keep in step with the Spirit of God.
It means checking in with God daily, hourly, even moment by moment. It means casting our cares on Him because He cares for us. It means expressing our thanks and praise to Him all throughout our day. And it means ASKING Him where He’s leading us and LISTENING for His response. God wants to speak to you. He wants to answer your questions and through Holy Spirit He can and does. But if we never take the time to listen and wait, we miss Him completely.
This is the CALL.
So this week, may we be aware of the Spirit we’ve been given, and drawn towards a closer, more “in step” walk with Him. For it is in this place of awareness and intimacy that our lives take on a new level of meaning and eternal significance.Linking with Heather 0
