sugar addict

“Sugar, like drugs of abuse, produces dopamine in the brain. The body’s own happy, feel good, chemical. For some true sugar addicts, they need this to feel OK. When they eat sugar, they feel good. When it wears off, they need more.” (source)

I’ll be the first to admit I have a MAJOR sweet tooth. I love my Cadbury Fruit and Nut bar, Sweedish Berries, Twizzlers, Kettle Corn…I could go on and on…and on.  It’s a scientific fact that sugar IS addictive. There’s something about the sweetness that keeps us coming back for more.

What if there was another way to enjoy that sweetness without going to sugar-filled treats? Something just as addictive, but so much more life-giving?

Psalm 119:103 says that God’s words “taste sweeter than honey”. Once we get a taste of His truth, we’ll find it’s not bitter or bland, but bursting with flavor, and full of life. But this sweetness needs to be extracted. Just as honey is pulled from the flower by diligent bees, mulled over and processed, we need to drink deeply of God’s truth, daily gleaning from its truth. The process requires discipline, time and effort, but the result is pure sweetness.

I want to be addicted to the word of God – always craving more of it’s life-giving truth. I desire to wake up yearning for more of the Lord’s law, pushing everything else in my life aside to taste the sweetness of His love for me.

One practical way to get addicted to God’s word is to join the she reads truth community. It’s an online community of people hungry for God’s word, committed to helping one another to stay consistent in our daily intake.

  1. Have you heard of the weight loss program called Weigh Down?? I am NOT saying you need it at ALL but this post reminds me of it! I don’t know much about it but my friend’s mom did it and anytime you are having cravings for food, you read scripture. I think it is wonderful! I love that you say, what if we were addicted to the word of God. So true

  2. My Bible Study leader from a few years ago used to always tell me God’s word was like sugar, the more time you spend in it, the more you want to be there! I love this post, great analogy and intro to #SheReadsTruth 🙂 I’ve been following/reading along with it and am so encouraged by the organic community that’s come about!

  3. Thanks for a great post today. You have such a fantastic way with words, and it is easy to see the gift and calling that God has on your life.
