The Best Marriage Advice

I designed my own wedding dress.

And I found a cute little Mennonite lady to sew it for me.

It only cost $400 for the fabric and the sewing!

But the most valuable gift I received from this amazing 80 year old lady was not the dress, but this advice about marriage:

“If you’re not happy, do something to make him happy, because at least one of you should be.”

Thank you so much Mary.

Your advice has been put to good use for the last 4(almost) years.

What can you do to make your spouse happy today?

  1. Wow I have never heard of such advice but it’s good! My mom always told me that when he is hubby you will be happy. So I work on that sometimes too. 🙂
    Lovely dress btw

  2. Heather, I had a little old menno lady named Mary sew my dress too! Did she live in E.K? I paid $250 for the fabric and $100 for her time! She did a great job on your dress 🙂

  3. Funny, I was just thinking about this as I read this morning. From Jean Vanier: “To be free is to put justice, truth, and service to others over and above our own personal gain or our need for recognition, power, honour, and success.” Sometimes it feels harder to do this for the ones we’re closest to, like our spouses – I wonder if this is because they know us much more intimately than anyone else? Great post, girl. Love your thoughts, as always. XO

  4. Mary made my dress too…Mine was $300…so worth it since it has remained in a box for the last 8 years. Her advice to me had to do with me feeling that my hips were too big. She said girls tend to either gain weight in their stomachs or in the hips and she said I don’t know about you but I would rather sit on it….Love her…

  5. 2 things- Love that you designed your own wedding dress! 2- Love the advice that lady gave you, I will most likely never forget it!
    oh and I guess 3 things 3- NEW FOLLOWER : ) *Sydney*

  6. That is such wonderful advice. You are so adorable! My best advice to young women is to make their husbands happy, not holy! I wish someone would have old me that 31 years ago when I got married.

  7. I didn’t design my own dress, but my mom sewed it for me, so it was cheap like yours. 🙂 I love the advice you got with your dress… that’s wonderful advice. Today, I baked cookies that my husband likes for him. And since he’s working late tonight, I’m waiting up for him so we can talk when he gets home.

  8. Wow, I didn’t know so many other people had Mary as their seamstress! I’m so glad that you went to her. I was just so amazed when she took my size 14 dress and made it fit me in one afternoon…. Only costing $50! she is amazing. I’ve recommended her to anyone that needed alterations or dresses made. As for your advice, that’s so great. Hard to do, since I’m pretty selfish and I just think I should always be happy too… But it’s important to remember to put husbands happiness first 🙂

  9. Never heard that before, but it is so true! I too had a cute Mennonite lady named Mary make my wedding…..$300. That was almost twenty years ago. I wonder if she is the same Mary? Your dress was gorgeous, a perfect summer wedding dress to wear on the beach. I loved mine too, the perfect winter wedding dress. And my husband designed my dress from British wedding magazine pictures. I just finished reading all the posts about Mary the seamstress. I guess this is good advertising for her!!!

  10. Beautiful advice. And so true. I was thanking God this Thanksgiving that my husband LOVES his job and all the other little things that make us happy! God is soooo good. LOVE your wedding dress!! hope you had a great thanksgiving!! xo
