“Every year at least 1.2 million children are estimated to be trafficked around the world and that number is growing. Child trafficking is not limited to developing countries…Latin America, the Caribbean and Africa are also becoming hot spots for child trafficking. The situation is also dire in countries such as: Cambodia, Thailand, Laos, Myanmar, the Philippines, India, Nepal, and Bangladesh.” (source)
It’s hard to actually grasp what this number means. But why does the number have to be this large to have an impact on us?
Even if the number was 1, this would be a horrendous tragedy.
In response to gross injustice such as this, many say “Why does God allow this to go on?”.
I say, “Why do we allow it?”
While we’re sitting in our warm, comfortable homes, surrounded by people and things we love, children are being bought and sold as sex slaves. Children as young as 6 and 7 years old! This is happening both in our own country and in countries across the world.
We can no longer ignore it.
Over the last few weeks I’ve been researching this issue, one that has been on my heart for years. I’ve realized that 2012 is to be a year of action for us. A year where we do something to help those who cannot help themselves.
“Justice at its best is love correcting everything that stands against love.” -Martin Luther King Jr.
There are two things I would challenge you to do today.
#1. Head over to Love 146’s website and click through the booklet on Modern Day Slavery. It will only take a few moments but the information will open your eyes to the issue of child slavery.
#2. Commit to pray for the children who are right now being held as sex slaves, around the world. Each time you look into the eyes of your own child (or a child close to you), whisper a prayer for the one who has no father or mother to protect them.
As we go through 2012 I’ll be providing other practical opportunities for us to join together and DO something to help those children affected by this issue. If you know of other organizations fighting against human trafficking, I’d love for you to share them in the comments below.
