when you feel inadequate

I had a heart to heart with Jesus this morning.

I was feeling inadequate again…it happens every once and a while.  Not on a day to day basis, but in moments of true honesty and reflection the feelings of insufficiency resurface. Last week I reacted out of anger and frustration and hurt someone dear to me. Instead of being slow to anger, slow to speak and quick to listen, my tongue took over. I never thought I was one to anger easily, but when life is squeezing my heart with trial, what comes out isn’t always pretty. Out of the overflow of the heart the mouth speaks…ouch.

Do you ever feel inadequate?  Like you’ve screwed up as a friend, a daughter or son, a spouse, a parent, a leader, a follower of Christ?  What circumstances draw those feelings out?  I’m guessing it has something to do with doing.  When we are  doing a lot we usually feel valuable, at least I do.  But when I’m not doing enough or the right stuff, that’s when I feel like a bit of a failure.

John 5:19-20: “Jesus gave them this answer: ‘Very truly I tell you, the Son can do nothing by himself; he can do only what he sees his Father doing, because whatever the Father does the Son also does. For the Father loves the Son and shows him all he does. Yes, and he will show him even greater works than these, so that you will be amazed.”

Wow!  Did you catch that?  Even Jesus, the Son of God said he could “do nothing by himself”!

Let out a deep sigh.

You can’t do it all right all the time, and that’s okay.  Not even Jesus could do it on His own.

Our call as followers of Christ isn’t to earn God’s love by doing.  Our call is not to busyness.  Our call is not to be productive.

Our call is to see what the Father is doing and do the same.

The only way to see what the Father is doing is to get to know the Father.  Spend time in the presence of God.  Learn to hear His still small voice speaking to you.  Watch what he’s doing and do the same.

And the Father will not hide His ways from you.  Look back at verse 20 for in it lies our hope.  “For the Father loves the Son and shows him all he does.” God longs to reveal more of himself to us but we have to be looking for him.  If we’re too busy trying to save the world on our own we may miss the heart of God for us.

Here’s a final thought for you.

You could spend the rest of your life in your bed, never getting up to do another good thing and God would love you just the same.  Do you believe that?  Your value is innate – it’s in you.  God loves you simply because he created you in his image.  Are you still trying to earn His love or can you take a moment today and just soak in his abundant love for you?
